Background INformation

Both events will include key South African energy decision-makers across major municipalities who are seeking information on U.S. technologies, services, and best practices to self-generate or procure energy directly from Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

In 2020, the Government of South Africa announced changes to legislation that now allow South African municipalities to procure electricity directly from IPPs, instead of purchasing entirely from Eskom, the country’s public utility, as they were previously required to do. At least ten cities and municipalities across the country are exploring these options, presenting a unique opportunity for U.S. companies to export their solutions in support of South African municipalities’ energy needs in the areas of generation, mini-grids, and energy storage.

Goals include:

  • Promoting energy security across South Africa’s municipalities
  • Sharing best practices in IPP procurement
  • Improving municipal management of the energy across generation, transmission, and storage

   WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND

  • Hear from South African municipalities on current energy capabilities, anticipated needs, and potential procurement opportunities
  • Network and build new partnerships with key decision-makers in a rapidly growing market
  • Learn more about key elements in municipal energy dealmaking including financing, delivery, and downstream production
BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES
  • Small to large scale renewable generation
  • Innovative energy storage solutions
  • Data monitoring and management technology
  • Digitization technology for grid optimization
  • Energy Efficiency Technologies

Attendance at this event is limited to U.S. individuals, U.S. firms, or U.S. consultants as defined by USTDA’s Nationality Source and Origin Requirements available on USTDA’s website at  http://www.ustda.gov/.
